History of the churches

FAITH UNITED CHURCH
The United Church of Christ (congregational) and the Methodist Church of Ada became one in the fall of 1970. Until that time, each church had maintained seperate buildings. Changing times and finances determined that these two groups would benefit from building and joining their efforts to expand the Christian influence in Ada. A building was erected on the west side of Ada that year, and it still serves the community.

ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH

The first Catholic church in Ada became a reality in 1895. Its location was the corner of Thorpe and West Main. This building is still standing. By the turn of the century, the congregation had outgrown its first church. The lot on which the church currently stands was purchased in 1914. A church, built in 1917, served until 1971 when the present structure was erected.

ZION LUTHERAN
CHURCH
A group of German pioneers gathered to worship at the Echo School as early as 1897. In 1919 a group of elders met with Rev. Janzow to organize a church. They purchesed the Catholic Church on the corner of Thorpe Ave. and West Main. Services were held in both German and English until 1938. This church served until 1958 when the current church building was dedicated.

GRACE LUTHERAN CHURCH
Historically, the current Grace Lutheran Church has, since 1878, incorporated OUR SAVIOR'S TRINITY and PITRI congregations. This combined congregation was first known as FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH and the current building was constructed in 1948. An educational building was added in 1956. First Lutheran changed its name to GRACE LUTHERAN in 1964.

SONRISE EVANGELICAL FREE CHURCH
The Evangelical Free Church of Norman County grew out of a home Bible Study in 1992. It was officially recognised by the EFCA in 1995. It has expanded its ministry to include missions giving, family confrences, radio ministry, and AWANA for children. It has purchased and currently meets in the historic Great Northern Train Depot in Ada.
